A typical shipping container home with 3-4 bedrooms, one or more bathrooms, laundry facilities, and kitchen can cost between $100,000 and $400,000 (USD).
As with any conventional home, the finishing (i.e. heating, electrical, plumbing, and fixtures) affects the total cost to build. Like a conventional home, the land upon which the house sits and the location of that land influences the total cost of construction. Container homes often cost less than typical houses. However, they are not the lowest cost option.
By contrast, the cost to build a tiny home – especially when doing some of the work yourself – is significantly less than a container home. Tiny homes can be completed for as little as $70,000 and provide you with all the comforts of home. They also offer the potential to move with the home if built on a trailer. However, tiny homes don’t have many of the advantage of container homes, such as ability to build out larger size plans and have multiple stories.
