A fabulous yoga practitioner I know went to Costa Rica. She reports that a number of companies there use shipping containers for hostels, vacation rental and cabins. Costa Rica has an abundant shipping industry and easy access to the port, and so repurposing shipping containers  is a simple process. Looser building code regulations allow for even more container designs and innovation.

This has allowed a stylistic fit for the droves of beach bums who are seeking affordable and secure housing — creating container cottages for those who would choose to live on the beach. The Costa Rican life-style attracts “back to the landers” and beach bums with money. It was only a matter of time before gringos would rise to the occasion and provide inexpensive, secure and ecologically sound beach-side accommodations.
